Practice Chanter
The Great Highland Bagpipes is one of the few instruments that has a "companion" instrument that is hardly ever played in public. Practice chanters are used both for learning and for ongoing practicing, so are not disposed once you are ready to play on the bagpipes.
In simple terms, it comprises of:
a blow piece
a chanter
a reed
The airflow and pressure needed to play a practice chanter is lower than that on the bagpipes, hence it's ease for learning.
Standard practice chanter (top), and long practice chanter (bottom)
